The most beautiful place for a life in nature
Anif is inextricably linked with the most important conductor of the 20th century - Herbert von Karajan. Here you will not only find his house, still inhabited by his wife Eliette, but also his simple grave. Until his death in Anif in 1989, he pulled the strings at the Salzburg Festival, brought world stars to the Mozart city and internationalized the festival.
Herbert von Karajan was an esthete. His love was symmetry, parallelism and order. The world of Karajan - it was always stylish and beautiful. He also had a great soft spot for nature - untouched, quiet. And so it is not surprising that Anif was the place that Karajan chose for himself and his family to build a house. At Easter 1968 he and his wife drove in a chic VW Beetle to the topping-out ceremony for their house in Anif, on Herbert von Karajan Strasse. From the outside the property looks almost simple, two stone horse heads flank the large gate to the farmhouse.
Unforgettable and loved
In front of the cemetery there is a bust of Karajan’s. The tomb itself is adorned with a simple, wrought-iron cross. The grave has now become a place of pilgrimage for Karajan followers from all over the world. They put down flowers and like to take some earth with them as a souvenir of the man who shaped an entire era and who is still celebrated today as one of the greatest conductors of classical music. When the Berliner Philharmoniker go to Salzburg, one can watch one or the other in their minds
