On the last Sunday in September one of the most important traditional events takes place in Anif. The annual customs have their origins in the different working periods of the farmers. This results in a yearly cycle that divides the year into festivals. In autumn, the farmers in the two districts of Anif and Niederalm celebrate the harvest festival. And there is a lot to celebrate, because Anif has very fertile soils, which have made it one of the largest growing areas for grain in the State of Salzburg.
Hand-tied crown
The focus of the harvest festival is a procession in which the so-called harvest crown is carried. This is lovingly tied by hand by the peasant women. The components of the crown are different types of grain. In the procession, all the associations and the population with the pastor, who walks under a so-called "sky" carried by four men, go into the fields and through the town to celebrate Thanksgiving. The children carry their own harvest gifts in baskets. After the procession, they go to one of the Anifer inns, where the Anifer band plays.
Time to think and be grateful
The harvest festival has moved to the center of annual festivities in many places in recent years. The festival invites you to reflect and be grateful for the gifts that we take for granted, such as bread, water, fruit and grain. So the peasant festival becomes a festival of mindfulness - which we all like to celebrate together.
