Busts of Herbert von Karajan and Norio Ohga in the park

Karajan’s grave

A quiet place with a great musical history. The gravesite of Herbert von Karajan, one of the most important conductors of the 20th century, is located in the Anif cemetery. Karajan lived in Anif, died here in 1989 and was buried in the village cemetery at his own request. For those interested in music, the Salzburg Festival and cultural history, this is a quiet, freely accessible place of remembrance – just a few kilometres south of the city of Salzburg.

Herbert von Karajan shaped the world of music like few others. Until his death in Anif in 1989, he was closely associated with the Salzburg Festival, brought international stars to Salzburg and played a key role in making the festival known worldwide.

In Anif, Karajan found a place that suited his attitude: quiet, well-kept, close to nature and yet closely connected to Salzburg. Here he built a house for himself and his family. The estate was a retreat, a natural space and an important part of his life and his artistic work.

A visit to the grave site can easily be combined with a walk through Anif. The parish church, the village centre and other cultural spots in the area are also nearby. For festival guests, music lovers and anyone wishing to explore Anif beyond the well-trodden paths, the Karajan grave site is a cultural point right in the village.
